Last Day of 4th Grade GT

Wow! What an amazingly creative year! We were busy up to the last second. Fourth graders had a photography challenge that really shows off their personalities today. Check out the results of their photo scavenger challenge.

Forced Perspective Photography

Instant Challenge

4th and 5th students attempted a balance of power instant challenge this week. The task: Build a structure that only touches the "ground" on the red square, but can suspend pennies over purple squares. Check out the problem solving and solutions from both classes.

Animoto Vocab Movies

What does a chair, a bbq grill, and a bridge have in common? They are all examples of a deck. Dig in deep to this unit's vocabulary by watching these student-created videos.

Tunnels and Dams

Students explored the engineering feats of tunnels and dams today and had a chance to create models and face some life-like challenges. Check out their progress in the video!

WeDo ArtBots 2.0

Fourth graders had a very challenging engineering task today! They designed a robot that can be programmed to create art. There were no plans to follow - they used their knowledge of gears and Lego mechanics in order to build a unique robot. We actually focused on our mistakes today and used what didn't work to figure out and re-design. Check out our "reflect and re-design" projects by watching the video!

Dome Day!

Fourth graders continued their exploration of architecture and engineering today as we examined and built domes. Ever wonder how strong an egg is? You might be surprised at how the shape strengthens the brittle shell. Check out the busy, teamwork-filled day by watching the video.

Vibrobots!

Fourth graders really had an "educationally amusing" challenge! We definitely had to have a growth mindset by figuring out what wouldn't work in order to get things to work! After all, we are hear to learn from our attempts! Students engineered robots out of some basic materials. The question this science experiment asked was "How does changing the counterweight on the motor effect the performance of the robot?" Most predicted a balanced weight (3 cm) would create the best performance (art). Watch the robot performances as they create art with the counterbalance at 1 cm, 3 cm, and 5.5 cm.

Mindset Matters!

This year one of the topics our classes have really been focusing on developing a growth mindset! We have been specifically learning about the difference between fixed and growth mindsets as well as appreciating a challenge, learning from failure growth opportunities, and being inspired by others. Alevins learning to swim

It has been a week since our eggs hatched! Boy, something fishy is going on- because these guys are growing SO fast! Check out this week's video of our Alevins.

Hatched!

As of Friday, there were about six eggs hatched. Check out the video below to see what I walked into on Monday morning - 59 little sac fry (a.k.a. - Alevin).

Fish Eggs Hatch!

5th graders predicted the hatch date of our rainbow trout eggs (based on mathematical calculations). And they were RIGHT! Fish started hatching on Jan. 28! Check out the time-lapse video to see them hatch. As of Friday, approximately 6 of 60 fish have hatched.
